Winter term 2024/2025, University Lecture: Information Science, Security, and Computing,
Dr. rer. nat. C.-P. Rückemann
Institut für Rechtsinformatik, EULISP,
Juristische Fakultät, Leibniz Universität Hannover.
University calendar:Information Science, Security, and Computing (61009) Event ID: Information Science, Security, and Computing (308010)
Presentation Topics: During the Lecture.
Thesis Topics: During the Lecture.
Marking/grading: Several weeks after the concluding part of the Lecture.
Date of Exam: Will be advised by the coordination.
ECTS points: 4
The complexity of information science methods is steadily increasing.
Distributed environments in various disciplines are a main factor.
On the other side information systems will have to evolve towards
ease of use and implementation, concealing the inherent mechanisms.
With this process, security concerns continuously get more important,
not only including hardware, software, and networking but also
regarding concepts, use cases, and social context.
This course gives an overview of the fundamentals of security of
information systems in various computing environments showing mechanisms
behind the scenes.
Important basics of computer science and security aspects are briefly discussed:
hardware and computation systems, software and operating systems as well
as various tools, programming languages, and programming paradigms. (Parts i-iii)
Main focus is on security issues regarding applications, internet,
protocols, operating systems, firewalls, encryption, steganography,
database systems, certificates, digital signatures, intrusion detection,
networks, accounting, and licensing issues.
A range of use cases will be discussed in order to acquire an overview
from classical to current developments comprising private resource usage,
data processing to various up to date implementations for distributed computing
environments, Grid computing, and High Performance Computing. (Parts I-III)
For on-site lectures and venues:
Basic practical demos/exercises, optional colloquium presentations, a summary and tutorial will complement the course.
In addition to the course optional virtual and on-site excursions to
data centres, computer centres, and/or High End Computing resources
will be organised if possible.
There are no special informatics prerequisites necessary
to take part in this course.

Scientific Publications vs. Newspapers and their Citability:
Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper. - Thomas Jefferson
Hints on Publishing:
With scientific publications, best practice is of major significance,
especially, to have blind peer reviews directly based on committees of renowned
experienced scientific peer reviewers,
review processes transparent to the scientific review committees,
and
publication license models, which explicitly state that rights remain with authors.
Be vigilant. Be careful. It should raise suspicion when instead, e.g.,
outside-third-parties and whoever interest groups, educational institutions, and public get involved
and external “quality-criteria” targets, “memberships” in collections, whatever “metrics” for science and competence,
and license models are propagated, especially those,
which do not explicitly state that rights remain with authors,
the more as not all lobbyists of hoi-polloi-open-access-models
and license models are willing to concede rights to the legitimate authors but others instead.
For typesetting of any papers, books, articles, texts, hypertexts, presentations, and documentations exclusively
LaTeX (LaTeX2e) with TeX is to be used. Implementations for all common
operating systems (including styles, fonts, tools, and documentation) can be found at
http://ctan.org, http://tug.org, and
http://www.dante.de.
A recommended universal and portable editing and data science environment is available at http://www.vim.org.
Sources for further tools to be used for different jobs, e.g., knowledge processing, graphical representations, procedural implementations, and parallelisation can for example be found at the

General and timeless principle with all knowledge, theoretical and practical:
Question: “How do I start with XYZ?”
Answer: “Read all the literature and documentation on XYZ (yourself), practice all the exercises and examples for XYZ (yourself)!”
This process involves education and experience and may take the time of a life.
Over lifetime you should read at least one philosophical, scientific, academic book per day,
actively contribute to the general meritocracy and performance-oriented and competitive society.
Academic language conventions should be practiced in all contexts, e.g., communications, documentations, and publications. It is disrecommended to use any language related simplifications or neologistic modifications.
All German Papers and texts for now and for future are to be authored according to the traditional German Rechtschreibung
(prior to the Rechtschreibreform and Reform of the Rechtschreibreform). In particular the
regulations of the new reform after 1996
are not to be used.
There are no serious measures for scientific results and insight besides experienced, fully educated academic peers.
Algebraic, numeric values, and comparable formalised “measures” can by definition
not express and represent criteria of academic, scientific
work, e.g., neither quality nor relevance nor evaluation nor other soft criteria.
They can not be a base for any such purpose.
All references/identifiers (e.g., URN) to any information should be kept persistent for unlimited time.
This includes publications, data, chronological and chorological information, e.g., regarding research, education, and curriculum.
However, in service to the scientific community we should be aware that today many institutions,
ranging from applied training to universities are led into directions
completely failing to provide any required consistency, coherency, and scientific sustainability.
This should therefore be compensated by scientists and scholars without relying on failing academic structures.
